A man was shot dead as he sat in a parked car in Lurgan, Co Armagh last night. The victim, believed to be in his 40s, was shot several times in the car-park of flats off Ulster Street.

RUC detectives were last night appealing for witnesses to the incident, which occurred at around 8 p.m. The man was sitting in the driver's seat of a white Toyota Corolla when he was shot. He is understood to have died at the scene.

Local sources have said they believed the killing of the man, a Catholic, was not sectarian and the incident may have been crime-related. The North's First Minister, Mr David Trimble, has condemned the killing.

The RUC is also investigating a pipe bomb attack on a taxi depot in Crumlin Road, Belfast last night. The device exploded in a downstairs office at around 8.20 p.m., causing minor damage. Two members of staff in an upstairs room at the time were unharmed.
