Gardaí have appealed for the public's assistance following the shooting dead of a man last night in Dublin’s latest gangland-style gun attack.

The victim (27) was shot on Ferrycarrig Road in Priorswood, Coolock, in the north of the city, at 10.20pm and was pronounced dead at the scene.

There is a lane way that leads from this cul-de-sac to Macroom Road, and gardaí believe many people passing through the area, including taxi-drivers and people making takeaway food deliveries, may have seen something unusual or suspicious.

The victim had been in the Priorswood Inn before to the shooting, and gardaí and are asking patrons of the establishment to assist them.

Gardaí are carrying out a technical examination of the scene. The body has been removed from the scene and the postmortem is scheduled to take place later today.

The Coolock shooting is the fourth gun-related death of 2010 after three men were killed last week in two separate attacks in the capital.

Paddy Mooney (58) and Brendan Molyneaux, in his mid-40s, were gunned down in a flats complex of Pearse Street in the city centre last Sunday.

A day earlier the body of John Paul Joyce (29), a drug dealer was found shot dead in a ditch behind Dublin airport.

Fears of further violence in the wake of last week’s attacks prompted Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy to deploy the force’s Emergency Response Unit onto the capital’s streets.
