Mayo admiral to be honoured in Cyprus

A bronze bust of Co Mayo-born Admiral William Brown, the founder of the Argentine Navy, is to be the centre piece of a presentation to be made to representatives of the country's naval services at a base in Cyprus, named in his honour, later this month.

The function will be held on Sunday next, the date on which Brown was born in Foxford in 1777.

It is being arranged by the Admiral Brown Society and Mayo County Council, some members of which will travel to the base, which is part of the UN peace-keeping force on the island for the last 29 years.

The bust was made by Foxford artist Tim Morris. Foxford-based Mr J.J. O'Hara, president of the Admiral Brown Society, said this came about following a letter he received 10 years ago from Mr John Maughan, who is now Mayo's football manager, while he was serving with the Army in Cyprus.
