A man in his mid-20s was seriously ill in Cork University Hospital last night after he was stabbed on the north side of Cork yesterday.

The man, who is from the Knocknaheeny area, suffered a serious wound to his neck when he was attacked and stabbed with what gardaí believe was a bottle on Hollyhill Lane, near Hollyhill Church, at about 5pm yesterday.

Gardaí were alerted by the emergency services, who received a number of 999 calls informing them of the attack. When an ambulance crew arrived at the scene they found the man lying in a pool of blood.

The victim was conscious at the time. However, he lost a lot of blood and fell unconscious as ambulance personnel tried to stabilise him.

He was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

Gardaí, under Supt Con Cadogan of Gurranebraher, have begun an investigation.

The scene was cordoned off to allow Garda technical experts to carry out a forensic examination of the area.

Supt Cadogan said that gardaí were keeping an open mind on a motive for the attack on the man.

He has asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Gurranebraher Garda on 021-494 6200.

A man in his 20s suffered a serious injury to his abdomen in another stabbing incident on Hollyhill Lane last year but gardaí do not believe that yesterday’s attack was linked to that earlier incident.
