Gardai have made an arrest after a 35-year-old man was stabbed to death at his home in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, early yesterday.
Mr David Cambell was found on the upstairs landing of the two-storey house at Breffni Crescent where he lived with his wife and two step-children.
Gardaí, responding to reports of a domestic dispute, arrived at the scene shortly before 1 a.m. and attempted unsuccessfully to resuscitate him.
One person was arrested by gardaí at 10 a.m. yesterday and taken to Carrick-on-Shannon Garda station for questioning. Gardaí said they were following a definite line of inquiry.
Mr Cambell, a restaurant chef who moved to Carrick-on-Shannon several years ago, had been living in the house for the past six months.
Originally from England, he lived until recently in north Dublin, where a number of members of his family live.
His body was found with a single stab wound to the chest. He received medical attention from a doctor and ambulance team at the scene but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Gardaí said they recovered a knife at the scene which they believe was used in the stabbing.
The scene was preserved for examination by Garda technical experts and the body was removed to Mullingar General Hospital for a post-mortem examination to be carried out by the assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.
Neighbours of Mr Cambell yesterday expressed their shock at the stabbing. Several called to the house during the day to lay flowers outside.
Supt Mark Kerrigan of Carrick-on-Shannon Garda station, who was leading the murder investigation, said gardaí were first to arrive at the scene early yesterday.
"When they arrived at the scene they discovered that a man had been stabbed. They tried to resuscitate this man to no avail," he said.
"The ambulance crew, when they arrived at the scene, tried to resuscitate him as well. A doctor was then called to the scene and he pronounced this man dead. A full Garda murder inquiry is now under way."
The person arrested by gardaí and held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act was due to be released last night with a file expected to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
