A man in his mid-20s remained in a critical but stable condition in a Cork hospital yesterday after he incurred head injuries when he was set upon in the city in what is believed to have been an attack without a motive.

The assault occurred at the junction of South Main Street and Washington Street late on Wednesday night. The injured man, who is from Killarney, Co Kerry, was transferred to Cork University Hospital for treatment.

Gardaí have interviewed a number of people who witnessed the incident but have been unable to discuss the attack with the injured man due to his injuries. They are anxious to speak to anyone who may have seen the assault.The person responsible for the attack is said to be in his mid- to late 20s, of medium height, with dark hair and casual clothes. He was seen fleeing through Washington Street and along the Western Road. Anyone with information is asked to contact gardaí at Anglesea Street station on 021-452 2000.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a man in his 30s is recovering in hospital in Cork after being stabbed. The victim, believed to be from eastern Europe, suffered stab wounds to his back yesterday morning, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

He managed to flag down a passing motorist on the Middle Glanmire Road in the city shortly after 9.30am. He was taken to Cork University Hospital where his condition was described as stable. Gardaí at Mayfield are appealing for anyone with information to call 021-455 8510.
