A 26-year-old man has been admitted to St James's Hospital with severe head injuries following an attack in west Dublin in the early hours of yesterday morning.

He is the second young man to suffer serious head injuries as the result of an assault in Dublin since the weekend.

The man, whose name is not being released by Gardaí, was attacked on the Long Mile Road in the south-west of the city at around 12.30 a.m. yesterday.

He was found badly beaten about the head and was taken to hospital. A spokeswoman last night said the man was conscious and described his condition as "comfortable".

Gardaí have said they are following a definite line of inquiry. It is believed there is a suspect in the case although no arrests had been made last night.

The attack follows the assault on Mr Barry Duggan (35), from Sligo, who was seriously beaten near Grafton Street in Dublin in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mr Duggan was attacked when he fell against a group of men in their early 20s while wheeling his bicycle up Grafton Street, shortly after 2 a.m. He was dragged down a nearby lane known as Lemon Street and badly beaten and kicked about the head and body before being left unconscious.

Gardaí were called to the scene and Mr Duggan was taken to St James's Hospital where he remained in a critical condition last night.

A file was sent to the DPP after three men in their 20s presented themselves to Pearse Street Garda station on Monday night.

Gardaí met Mr Duggan's parents yesterday to assure them that they were vigorously pursuing the investigation.
