A SENIOR garda told a court yesterday that a man charged with the murder of law student Eoin Ryan is to be tried for the alleged offence in the Central Criminal Court.
At Ennis District Court yesterday, Supt Peter Duff said the DPP has directed that Joe Heffernan (31), of Cappabeg, Barefield, Co Clare, be tried on indictment before the Central Criminal Court. When initially charged with the murder last June, Mr Heffernan told gardaí he had “killed the devil”.
Supt Duff said the book of evidence would be ready for September 23rd.
Mr Heffernan is charged with the murder of Mr Ryan (21) at Cappabeg, Barefield, on June 7th last. He is on remand at the Central Mental Hospital at Dundrum, Dublin, and his presence in court was excused for the fourth time yesterday. Mr Heffernan has appeared in court twice in relation to the charge.
Supt Duff applied for a further remand in custody for Mr Heffernan to appear in court on September 2nd. Mr Heffernan has already been granted legal aid.
Judge John O’Neill yesterday further remanded Mr Heffernan in custody to appear before Ennis District Court on September 2nd.
