A young man who caused £78,000 damage when he set fire to a national school has been jailed for eight years for a string of arson, criminal damage and robbery offences.

Damien Carolan (19) attacked a Garda station and chip shop before smashing the windows of his former school. He came back on another date and burnt out the classrooms. He was released on bail and committed four robberies in one week. He had seven previous convictions.

Carolan, of Airlie Heights, Lucan, pleaded guilty to arson, burglary and four counts of criminal damage and robbery on various dates in 1998.
