A 28-year-old man was recovering last night after he was shot in the leg in Northern Ireland.

The man was wounded in a paramilitary-style shooting in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim.

He was bundled into a car in the Pinewood area and driven to Cloughfern Corner.

The victim was taken out of the car and shot in the leg.

He was discovered at around 8pm and taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, in Co Down, a heavily pregnant woman was forced to leave her home after an arson attack was made on an adjoining flat.

The fire was started at Brook Grove in Banbridge, in a vacant ground-floor flat which was completely burned out.

A man in the apartment above was asleep at the time of the attack, but was able to escape with other residents after a neighbour raised the alarm.

His flat suffered extensive smoke damage.

A couple, including the pregnant woman, also fled after residents were alerted to what was going on.

Their home suffered smoke damage.

The alarm was raised by the neighbour living above them whose apartment also suffered smoke damage.

Police in Banbridge have appealed to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in Brook Grove in the early hours to help them with their investigation.

Elsewhere, police made a series of arrests which they said were related to serious crime.

Five men were arrested and were being questioned in the Armagh and Dungannon areas, the Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesman said.
