Market forces are bringing the two parts of Ireland closer together, according to Dr Martin Mansergh, special adviser to the Taoiseach.
"The Republic is a far more attractive economic partner for the North even than it was at Sunningdale," he told an audience at St Peter's College, Wexford, where he delivered a 1798 commemoration lecture. Dr Mansergh said the Belfast Agreement was significant in bringing together within one framework diverse political elements. ein.
"Whether they can all politically coexist and work together has yet, of course, to be put to the test, but I believe the obstacles will be overcome, because of the decisive democratic backing from the people," he said.
