There was a stand-off yesterday between anti-war activists and gardaí at Shannon Airport after gardaí refused the activists access to the airport.
Late yesterday afternoon, 30 anti-war activists arrived at Shannon after walking 53 miles from Galway over two days in an anti-war march, but were prevented from going beyond the entrance to the airport.
One of the activists, Mr Nick Jones, said last night: "It is really disappointing because we have walked such a long distance only to be turned away and no reason has been given."
Amongst the protesters was Mr Eoin Dubsky, who was last month convicted of the criminal damage of a US Hercules jet in Shannon in September.
A former member of the peace camp in Shannon, Ms Kay White, said: "After being refused entry, we stood in a circle and sang songs."
After remaining at the entrance to the airport for 1½ hours, the protesters left the area at 7 p.m. last night.
