Marchers celebrate city's great sporting tradition

A UN mine-sweeper gave Limerick streets the all clear yesterday as some The mine-sweeper formed part of the United Nations Veterans' Association float which was one of 60 groups taking part in this year's parade. Sporting organisations dominated the 90-minute parade through the city from the Crescent Monument to the Hunt Museum.

The theme of the parade was Limerick, city of sport, and the grand marshals for the event were the all-conquering University of Limerick Women's Basketball Team. Limerick's proud rugby-playing tradition was well represented with all of the city's major rugby clubs taking part.

Music was provided by Limerick's well-known marching bands including Sammy Benson's Band, Boherbuoy Brass and Reed Band and the CBS Pipe band The Mayor of Limerick, Mr Dick Sadlier, praised everyone involved in organising yesterday's event. "I think it was a fantastic parade and it had something for everybody. It was a wonderful occasion which involved all of the community. The sporting theme, which is the essence of Limerick, ran right through it," said Mr Sadlier.

The entertainment continued in Limerick long after the parade was over with a special celebration of Irish music and culture at King John's Castle. A stage was erected by organisers - Shannon Heritage - in the 13th century courtyard where ballad singers, Irish dancers and historic characters provided entertainment until 6 p.m.

This year's St Patrick's Day celebrations in Limerick formed part of the annual St Patrick's Spring Fest which runs until March 21st.

The ten-day festival is run by the Limerick Co-ordination Office which has been charged with promoting the city in a positive light.
