THE Kerry port of Fenit is planning to build a 100 berth marina as part of a £3.5 million harbour development.
If approved, it will open in 1998, at the same time as the proposed 500 berth marina in Dun Laoghaire.
The 300 berth private marina planned for Greystones, Co Wicklow, backed by the Isle of Man businessman, Mr Albert Gubay, is still a "live" application with the Department of the Marine. A foreshore licence application has been lodged.
A Dutch company has been awarded an £885,000 dredging contract for the first phase of the Fenit project, which is financed by the Department of the Marine. EU funding for the major works, including construction of a new 260 metre breakwater and a 90 metre quay, at a cost of £2.4 million, is being sought. A new sheltered berth for the Fenit lifeboat will also be provided.
If these general works are completed, then the proposed £0.3 million marina will be built, with EU funding being channelled through Shannon Development.
To protect Tralee Bay's oyster fishery, University College Cork's aquatic services department will monitor silt movements in the inner bay.
The Dun Laoghaire Harbour Authority has advertised tenders for design and planning of a £10 million structure in the "middle harbour".
