The Minister for Health, Mr Martin, warned publicans they face losing their licences if they fail to implement the smoking ban due to be introduced next Monday.
Speaking at the final press conference before the ban comes into effect, Mr Martin said the legislation for enforcing the ban on smoking in all enclosed workplaces allows for health boards to oppose the renewal of pub licences.
Mr Martin said the response to the publicity campaign on the smoking ban has been "very positive" with a "huge" demand
for information materials about implementing the measures.
Mr Martin said the tobacco free initiative has the support of the majority of people in Ireland, smokers and non-smokers alike. "This is a positive, progressive health and safety measure, which will bestow positive benefits to workers and the general public alike."
Mr Martin said the licensed trade has adopted a "cooperative and responsible position" towards implementing the ban.
Environmental health officers working through the health boards
will be monitoring compliance in places where food and drinks are served.
Mr Martin acknowledged the new measure will require some adjustment and will not be entirely problem free but he remained confident that people will adjust. "Most people are law abiding and responsible and I am confident that the vast majority of employers, employees and the public will respect the new measure," he said.
