HOLLYWOOD ACTOR Martin Sheen is due in Kiltimagh, Co Mayo, later this week to deliver a eulogy at the funeral of an Irish-born nun whom he described as a “dear friend” of his.
Sr Mary Campbell (75), originally from the Kiltimagh area, died instantly in a crash in Malibu, California, last week. She was a passenger in a car driven by the US ambassador to Malta, Doug Kmaic.
Mr Kmaic escaped serious injury but Sr Mary was killed and another passenger, Co Longford native Msgr John Sheridan, was seriously injured.
The three were returning from a function to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the St Louis Order in the United States.
One of the first cars on the scene carried Sr Mary’s friend Martin Sheen and his actor son, Emilio Estevez.
Family sources have confirmed that Mr Sheen is expected to speak on Thursday next at Sr Mary’s funeral Mass in the Church of the Holy Family, Kiltimagh.
Sister Mary, who was a principal and schoolteacher up to her retirement in 2003, will be buried in Kilkinure cemetery, Kiltimagh, with her parents and a sister, Kathleen Campbell, who predeceased her.
