A mass funeral has taken place in Cairo for more than 100 unidentified victims of the Egyptian train disaster.

The country's top Islamic cleric led the prayers beside 14 large graves at the al-Tunsi cemetery.

In his funeral oration, Grand Imam Mohammed Sayed Tantawi said the dead were martyrs.

Those being buried had been burned beyond recognition. Other victims had been buried earlier in private funerals.

The bodies arrived in wooden coffins, draped in the national flag, carried by a fleet of ambulances.

Police armed with batons stood guard on the cemetery's walls. Scores of mourners were kept outside the cemetery by security officials who feared overcrowding.
