The Mater Private Hospital is submitting a tender to the HSE today for the development of four private hospitals on public hospital sites.
The sites are at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, University College Hospital in Galway, the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick and the Regional Hospital Waterford.
Fergus Clancy, chief executive of the Mater Private, said the hospital's decision to tender for the development was part of the HSE's initiative to encourage co-operation between the public and private sectors.
"Being co-located with the Mater University Hospital for 20 years has given us a truly unique understanding of how the co-located method of managing the public/private mix for the benefit of all patients can operate," he said.
"The hospital successfully provides a high-quality acute tertiary service in a manner that is complementary to the public health system," he added.
