Making a splash . . . Donnacha O'Brien and Pat Tuohy take to the river wild during today's Jameson Liffey Descent - Inpho |
08/09/01: Gary Mawer took the K1 title at the Jameson Liffey Descent this afternoon, holding off the challenge of a strong international field to win for the third time in this class.
The win earns Mawer, a two-time Olympian and fourth place finisher at the recent World Marathon Championships, an invitation to the upcoming Hansa Fish marathon in South Africa.
The 30-year-old from Celbridge had to contend with low water levels over the 18-mile course but by the finish had built a commanding six-minute lead over Fergus Cooper in second.
Veteran paddler Eileen Murphy secured her first win in over 10 years to win the women’s K1 title. Murphy finished three minutes ahead of South Africa’s Alice Rawlinson.
