Co Donegal publican Mr Frank McBrearty senior this evening welcomed the suspension of two gardaí involved in the miscarriage of justice case involving Mr Frank Short.

Supt Kevin Lennon and Garda Tina Fowley were suspended yesterday by the Garda Commissioner Pat Byrne. A third member of the force, Det Garda Noel McMahon, is already on suspension.

Mr McBrearty told RTÉ radio the gardaí concerned should have been suspended long ago.

Mr McBrearty said the terms of the Morris tribunal - which is in inquiring into allegations of garda misconduct in Donegal - should be extended to allow the questioning of Commissioner Byrne and former ministers for justice Ms Nora Owen and Mr John O'Donoghue.

He added that while there are good gardaí within the force the "bad apples" had to be weeded out.

Mr McBrearty said a Garda Ombudsman was required because an increasing number of people were being affected by alleged garda corruption.
