The Det Garda Jerry McCabe murder trial was unexpectedly adjourned yesterday after counsel for one of the defendants said there had been "a certain development".

Ms Eilis McDermott QC applied for an adjournment at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin until this morning. She appears for Mr John Quinn (31), from Faha, Patrickswell, Co Limerick, who is accused of conspiracy and ammunition offences.

When the trial resumed yesterday, Ms McDermott told the three judges she was making the application for an adjournment with "some hesitation and reluctance" but there had been a certain development.

Counsel for the four men accused of Garda McCabe's capital murder supported Ms McDermott's application. Mr Edward Comyn SC, prosecuting, said the prosecution consented to the application and the court adjourned the trial until today. It was the 14th day of the trial of four men charged with the murder of Garda McCabe (52) during an abortive post office van robbery in Adare, Co Limerick, on June 7th, 1996.
