McLaren technical director Adrian Newey will be staying at the team beyond the terms of his existing contract, the Formula One team said today hours after Jaguar claimed they had secured his services.
In a statement that appeared to contradict an earlier one released by rivals Jaguar, McLaren said: "McLaren International and Adrian Newey wish to confirm that he will continue with the team beyond the term of his existing contract."
"A fuller statement will be issued later today."
A McLaren spokesperson confirmed that Newey's current contract expired in August 2002.
