The Rennicks Plastics plant, which produces plastic mouldings, is to close at the end of October.

The company said the closure had resulted from "an erosion of its customer base from increased competition from lower cost economies". However, the Rennicks signage division is not affected and is a growing company a spokesperson said.

Mr Gerry Lynch, SIPTU's Dublin Electronics and engineering Branch Secretary, called on the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment, the IDA and other state agencies to use the intervening period between now and the intended closure date of October 30th to lobby for a replacement industry.

"It is our intention to ballot our members for industrial action in pursuit of improved redundancy terms over and above those initially offered by the management," said Mr Lynch.

The plant has a predominately female workforce.
