Costa Rica's ambassador to the United States, Ms Sonia Picado Sotela, has had a meeting with the UN Secretary General, Mr Kofl Annan, to discuss the post of UN Human Rights Commissioner.
After Thursday's meeting, the ambassador said: "I am the candidate of the Latin American and Caribbean countries. It's a very important position and he [Annan] wants to have the opportunity to meet with a lot of different people."
Mr Jose Ayala Lasso stepped down this month as the first High Commissioner for Human Rights in order to become foreign minister of Ecuador. He was named to the UN post in 1994 and still had more than a year to serve under hiss appointment.
The Government announced, last month it was to make diplomatic moves to try to secure the post of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for the President, Mrs Robinson.
