Ironically, it is the grandeur of the Sirius Arts Centre space itself which militates against Hilary Nunan's small-scale work hanging in the West Wing Gallery. That said, these photographic and mixed media assemblages, titled Objects and Textures, remain extremely interesting. Here, Nunan's curiosity serves to create microcosmic landscapes of the imagination, where the lens zooms in on hands, flowers, pins, hair, liquid, etc.
The result is very sensuous tactile images, where deep red and glowing orange brood behind the dark silhouettes of these shapes. The work is then loaded with rich symbolism, establishing allegories for the conflicts between pain and beauty, decadence and danger.
In The Centre Gallery, Megan Eustace's mixed media drawings, Drawing it Out, illustrate a keen creative force, shaped by contemplative or emotive sources and subjects. Certain pieces reside in a languid atmospheric abstraction reminiscent of Cy Twombly while others deal with figure drawing, but very much on her own terms. The fragility and beauty of many of these works demonstrate how the union between concept and material can still yield artwork which has a lot to say but without having to resort to shouting.
