Senior Sinn Féin and SDLP members attended a cross-party service of remembrance at the weekend for former Progressive Unionist Party (PUP) leader David Ervine, who died last January.

The 53-year-old East Belfast Assembly member died after suffering a heart attack and stroke. He had played a key role in the talks which led to the Belfast Agreement 10 years ago, and was instrumental in achieving the UVF ceasefire.

He was succeeded in the leadership of the small party by Dawn Purvis, who also retained the sole PUP seat at Stormont in the March election last year.

Sinn Féin's Alex Maskey, SDLP leader Mark Durkan and unionist colleagues and close friends attended the memorial for Mr Ervine at the weekend.

Also present was Mr Ervine's son, Mark, minister and friend the Rev Gary Mason, while west Belfast singer Brian Kennedy provided the music.

Ms Purvis said the gathering was about "celebrating his life and the contribution he made to the future of Northern Ireland".

"We know that the Good Friday Agreement is going to be 10 years old this year, and David made a massive contribution in getting the agreement and in seeing devolution restored to the assembly," she said.
