Four men, three from Dublin and one Scot, are expected to appear in court over the weekend charged in connection with one of the larger heroin seizures in Dublin in recent times.

The four were arrested by members of the Garda's North Central Division drugs unit late on Thursday night after a surveillance operation over a number of days.

It is understood the gardai were watching two brothers who were suspected of running a heroin distribution network in the north of the city and traced them to a meeting in a northside hotel.

There the two brothers, from Ballymun and Finglas, met a Scot and another Dublin man who have been operating a drugs supply operation from London. The Scot has only recently been released from prison in England on a drugs-related offence.

Gardai raided two rooms and recovered 7kg of heroin, believed to be between 60 to 70 per cent pure, with a street value put by gardai at about £2 million. There was also more than £80,000 in Irish pounds and sterling.

It is believed the Scot and the London-based Dublin man had brought the heroin into the State and were selling it by the kilogram to Dublin suppliers. It is understood that at this "wholesale" level, heroin is sold to major distributors at between £25,000 and £30,000 a kilogram.

Also on Thursday night uniformed gardai in Lucan arrested a Ronanstown man who was attempting to sell heroin in a local pub.

The man was first apprehended by a local resident after apparently offering heroin to his wife, and by the time gardai arrived the man had received a number of blows. He was taken to Lucan Garda station. Gardai then searched a van belonging to the man in the pub car-park and discovered a large package of heroin valued at £100,000.
