Dublin Fianna Fail MEP, Mr Niall Andrews, told a group of provincial press and radio representatives in Brussels yesterday that the murder of Veronica Guerin had placed a threat on the life of every journalist.

Mr Andrews, one of a group of six MEPs who addressed a briefing of the journalists, called for the introduction of legislation which would lead to a mandatory jail term of 10 to 12 years for anyone caught in possession of an illegally held gun.

"People who carry a weapon have it with intent to murder - the whole country is in deep shock over the killing of the journalist."

He believed the murder was linked to the drugs trade and said the victim had tried to expose criminals who were involved in international racketeering, including money laundering.
