Met Éireann has issued a gale warning as strong storms and winds gusting up to 60 or 70 mph hit all parts of the country.
Several hundred ESB customers were without electricity this morning after power lines were cut affecting a number of areas including: Galway, Roscommon, Fermoy, Ballina, Arklow, Waterford and parts of Bray.
Repair crews have now restored power to homes in most parts of the country but are still working to restore supply and to repair or replace damaged equipment in Clifden.
Strong winds from a west to northwest direction have resulted in high, choppy seas, affecting ferry crossings from Rosslare to Fishguard.
Stena Line said it has cancelled all this morning’s sailings and asked passengers to keep in touch with its travel information service. This evening’s sailing are now considered doubtful.
Sailings from Dublin Port Ferries have not been affected.
Temperatures will remain low at just 6 to 8 degrees Celsius.
The winds are due to ease later tonight and tomorrow morning. Rain will also ease to give a widespread frost with icy roads.
Lowest temperatures will range from 2 to -2 degrees later this evening.
However, some cloud and drizzle may come into the far West tomorrow with just a few patches of sunshine.
