Mexico has arrested the former head of its intelligence agency over the 1975 kidnapping and disappearance of a young revolutionary.
Mr Miguel Nazar Haro, named by survivors as a notorious inquisitor in the so-called "dirty war," was arrested while driving his car in Mexico City with his wife and daughter, the Attorney General's Office
He was arrested yesterday as part of an investigation of state atrocities committed three decades ago.
Attorney General Rafael Macedo told Televisanews that Nazar Haro was receiving a medical examination before being flown to Monterrey to face charges.
The arrest came more than two months after warrants were issued for Mr Nazar Haro and two others in the kidnapping of urban rebel Jesus Piedra Ibarra in that city.
The case is seen as crucial to President Vicente Fox's drive to punish past atrocities.
