Dublin Corporation has conceded that the 400-ft high millennium monument in O'Connell Street will not now be ready for the year 2000. In a statement yesterday the corporation said the project should have been submitted for an environmental impact assessment under the planning regulations.
Last week the High Court held that the corporation had not adhered to correct planning procedures and the planning process would have to start all over again. Around £600,000 has already been spent on the "spike" project.
Dublin Corporation said it remained committed to the monument and would now be preparing an environmental impact assessment. However it was now "clear that the monument will not be constructed by 31st December".
