The daughter of former Yugoslav president Mr Slobodan Milosevic appeared in court in Belgrade today charged with firing shots at a government official when her father was arrested after a tense standoff at his presidential residence in April.

Ms Marija Milosevic - who owned a television station during her father's hardline regime - appeared at a hearing on charges of threatening an official and illegal possession of firearms.

The 34-year-old is accused of firing shots at a key official who was to negotiate with her father at his residence before police took him into custody to face corruption charges on April 1st last.

Her father is in custody in The Hague charged before an international tribunal with war crimes committed during conflicts in Croatia, Bosnia and in Kosovo.

During the long hours of stand-off pending his arrest in April, his wife and daughter remained with him until the last moment in the presidential residence in the luxurious Belgrade district of Dedinje.

Shots were heard immediately before Mr Milosevic was whisked away from the residence compound.

If convicted of the charges against her, Marija Milosevic could face up to eight years jail. The prosecution says she "committed a criminal act by causing public danger."
