The new chairman of the Irish Blood Transfusion Board (IBTS) is former Donegal county manager Mr Michael McLoone.
The announcement, made today by Minister for Health Mr Martin, sees Mr McLoone take over from Prof Patricia Barker, who resigned under controversial circumstances last month.
Mr McLoone’s first task will be a major programme of development in the organisation. But it is believed changes made by Prof Barker, especially the ending of blood testing in Cork - and the subsequent criticism she received - led to her resignation.
While announcing the appointment of Mr McLoone, the Minister paid tribute to Prof Barker, saying she had made a major contribution to the redevelopment service.
The Minster said there were significant challenges ahead and that Mr McLoone’s experience in developing services was particularly relevant to his role at the IBTS.
"His widespread experience at top levels in the public service including the health services will be a major resource to the board," the Minister said.
