THE COMPLETION of the new Thurles fire station will ensure the town and surrounding areas will continue to be served by the service for many years, according to Dave Carroll, chief fire officer of North Tipperary County Fire and Rescue Service. He was commenting ahead of a visit to the station by Máire Hoctor, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children.
The Minister will join Cllr Joe Hennessy, mayor of North Tipperary, in officially opening the new station next Monday.
The station is funded by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government at a cost of approximately €2.6 million.
The new facilities, which were delivered by Ennis-based contractor Martin Fitzgibbon, include six appliance bays, drying room facilities, watchroom, lecture room, male and female welfare facilities, breathing apparatus maintenance room, senior officer offices, training yard and tower.
Dr Hennessy said the new station would help boost the fire fighting capabilities of the service in the Thurles area.
“I am delighted to see that North Tipperary County Council, with the support of the department, is able to continue its programme of maintaining a modern and well-equipped fire service.”
