The weather is likely to shed a little light on the weekend with plenty of sunny spells and moderate temperatures in the 11 - 15°C range.
But as though heralding the darkness, light showers on Saturday will change to heavy rainfall and stormy conditions by Sunday evening. The trend is likely to continue for the early part of the week, so now is the time to get the woodcutting done.
Still, the Irish have never been ones to allow bad weather slow them down and fast times can be expected in Cork and Dublin, and elsewhere.
The Cork Jazz Festival ends the music festival season, kicking off tonight with the Hammond organ maestro Jimmy Smith and his band providing a powerful warm-up to the four-day shindig.
Other notables over the weekend include the Mingus Band; one of the world's most respected trumpeters Terence Blanchard; vocalist Jane Monheit and 80-year-old sax legend, Charlie Mariano.
Fast times of a different sort can be expected in the capital on Monday, when 10,500 hit the streets for the Dublin Marathon. The field is the second largest in the race's 22-year history.
Top-name Africans such as Zacharia Mpolokeng and Lezan Kimutai could be overshadowed if actor, Daniel Day-Lewis takes part as rumoured.
Of course there are those who just cannot take being in the country, watching the sun set on their summer. Dublin Airport Authority is anticipating more than 255,000 passengers through Dublin Airport over the holiday weekend - mostly to sun destinations.
There will be plenty of holiday activity in Ireland as well. Over 200,000 are expected to travel on intercity over the weekend and demands has led to a reservations system being put in place for Dublin-Cork services.
AA Roadwatch are already reporting congestion on major routes.
Delays of up to an hour are reported on the N8 around Monasterevin, Co Kildare and half an hour on the N11 at Gorey, Co Wexford. All routes in and out of Galway city and Cork city are very congested; and heavy traffic in Waterford city is also reported.
The AA is also advising that roadworks will add to bank holiday traffic at Clara on the Kilkenny/Carlow road.
No change there, then.
