The target date for European Monetary Union will be met, according to the Minister for Finance, Mr Quinn, writing in a booklet published by Labour Left Forum and entitled The Euro - Its Implications or Ireland.

"While sceptical voices have received much publicity, the fact remains that no later than last December the heads of state and government unequivocally confirmed January 1st, 1999, as the starting date.

"To defer this date would risk considerable political embarrassment and could well give exchange markets with markets fearing that postponement of the project would also give rise to an undesirable loosening of fiscal policy as the need to respect the Maastricht constraints was seen to recede."

The booklet was launched by the chairman of the Labour Party's policy development commission, Mr Joe Costello TD. Copies are available from Labour Left Forum, 52 Silchester Park, Co Dublin, for £4.70, including post and packaging.
