Colin Montgomerie sealed his Ryder Cup place this afternoon by claiming his third Volvo Scandinavian Masters title in Malmo.
Montgomerie fired a final round 70 for a one stroke victory over Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter to claim the Stg£184,000 first prize and, more importantly, 300,000 Ryder Cup points.
Westwood had a chance to force a play-off with a birdie at the last but pulled his approach into the crowd and had to settle for par and a share of second alongside playing partner Poulter.
Five players were a shot further back on 12 under including Kent's Warren Bennett, who lost out in a play-off to Bernhard Langer in the Dutch Open seven days ago.
Montgomerie won by nine shots when the tournament was last held at Barseback two years ago and carved out a four-shot lead at one stage on the final day before bogeys at the last two holes left him with an anxious wait.
Westwood birdied the 16th to get within a shot and missed a good chance on the 17th to draw level while Poulter holed from 20 feet for his only birdie of the day on the last to earn more valuable Ryder Cup points.
Montgomerie had admitted at the start of the week that his cup place was not secure after Bernhard Langer's victory in the Dutch Open had pushed him down to eighth in the standings with only the top 10 after the BMW International Open guaranteed a spot in the European team.
But such worries quickly faded after Montgomerie's opening 66 and after rounds of 69 on Friday and Saturday he eventually sealed his second win of year, five weeks after the Irish Open victory that ended a run of 54 weeks without a title on the European Tour.
Darren Clarke, already assured of his Ryder Cup spot, finished his weekend’s work with a 73 to leave him on 9 under for the tournament.
