Support for holding another abortion referendum has risen, according to a poll commissioned by the Pro-Life Campaign.
The poll, conducted by Irish Marketing Surveys, sought views on a new abortion referendum, the legalisation of abortion, and proposed wording for a constitutional amendment.
Some 58 per cent said they opposed abortion in all circumstances, 24 per cent favoured its legalisation, and 18 per cent said they did not know.
Again, 58 per cent indicated their support for holding a referendum, with 25 opposed and 17 undecided. This compares with 52 per cent in favour in 1997, and 31 per cent against.
On a proposal to add a sentence to Article 40.3.3 which acknowledges the right to life of the unborn - "No law shall be enacted and no provision of this constitution shall be interpreted to make induced abortion lawful in the State - only 37 per cent were in favour, with 27 per cent against and 36 per cent saying they did not know.
