As if traffic jams, tolls and roaming pet monkeys were not enough to contend with, drivers today faced tailbacks due to the appearance of three greyhounds and a cow running loose on the roads.

Yesterday, bleary-eyed motorists on the N11 in Co Wicklow had their morning rush-hour journeys disturbed when Gina, a pet capuchin monkey, got loose on the road.

Traffic came to a standstill on the southbound carriageway at Kilmacanogue until the monkey was finally caught and returned to her grateful owner, at around 8.45am.

Drivers travelling northbound on the same road today were greeted by the sight of three greyhounds on the loose at the Rathmichael exit of the N11.

As if that wasn't enough, a stray cow was found on the loose on the M1 central reservation between Swords and Balbriggan shortly after 9am this morning. The cow has since been removed from the road.

Over the years, a number of animals have been found running loose on Irish roads including horses, sheep, chickens, deer, a duck and even a camel that had escaped from a local circus.
