With another Midlands textile company expected to announce its closure tomorrow, SIPTU has today called on the Government to be more proactive in preventing job losses.
SIPTU’s Midlands Regional Secretary Mr Mike Jennings said the Government must be more "interventionist" when faced with the imminent closure of a company.
Although he would not name the firm planning to close, he said about 25 jobs will be lost - bringing the total losses in the region since the start of January to nearly 400.
"We are asking the Government to be more interventionist in their approach to the threat of job losses rather than just accepting a company closure after the event," he said.
Mr Jennings said the Government should be more proactive by meeting companys in advance of a threatened closure to identify what factors are involved and what help it can give to prevent the company folding.
He said there has been a string of closures in the Midlands which began with the loss of over 200 jobs at the Tullamore base of outdoor goods manufacturer Lowe Alpine on January 5th.
Other firms who have announced job losses in the region over the last month include the Snickers workwear factory in Tullamore and Dawn Dairies in Moate.
