Many parts of the country experienced heavy rain yesterday but the south and south-west took the brunt of it, leading to flooding in the Kilkenny area. A spokeswoman for Met Eireann said there had been more than 24 hours of heavy rain. Valentia and the southwest recorded 25mm of rain from 6 p.m. on Sunday to 6 p.m. yesterday. In Cork, over 30mm of rain fell during the same period.
The heavy rain is expected to gradually die out later today but there will still be a few heavy showers. There will then be a respite until Thursday, when more rain is expected.
The body of Mrs Dolly Rafter (60), of Durrow, Co Laois, who died in 4ft of water, was found on Sunday. She managed to free herself from her car after it ran into flood waters on a back road in Co Kilkenny during heavy fog, but was unable to escape the freezing waters on the road at Inchmore, near Freshford. Her body was found about 18 hours after the tragedy is believed to have happened.
