A 28-year-old man has been charged in relation to the death of a Lithuanian man in Wexford town on Monday evening.
Jurijz Princs, with an address at Cromwellsfort House, Wexford, appeared before a special sitting of New Ross District Court yesterday evening.
Mr Princs was charged with assaulting Robertas Stravinshas, Cromwellsfort House, Wexford, on May 23rd at Cromwellsfort House, causing him harm Contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.
Mr Princs was also before the court on foot of two bench warrants in relation to driving with excess alcohol at Rocklands, Wexford, on May 16th, 2005, and with failing to appear at Wexford District Court on May 23rd, 2005, and also Wexford District Court on December 20th, 2004, while being a person on bail.
Det Garda Pat O'Brien gave evidence to the court of having arrested the defendant. When the charge was put to him he had no reply.
Garda David Beale told the court that he had earlier arrested the defendant on foot of two bench warrants in relation to driving with excess alcohol and failing to turn up in court while on bail.
David Tarrant, solicitor, for the defendant, said he was instructed by the defendant that he did not turn up in court as he did not realise the seriousness of his failing to appear.
He was in the area at the time of both courts and had not moved away.
Garda Beale told the court that the defendant's English was "not bad" as he had been living in the country for three years, while Mr Tarrant said he had been legitimately living in the country.
After Mr Tarrant made a formal application for bail, Insp Pat McDonald said he would be applying for a remand in custody to Gorey District Court on Friday next, owing to the seriousness of the charge. More serious charges were likely to follow.
