Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison looks poised to make his full debut for the Republic of Ireland in Wednesday's friendly against Croatia at Lansdowne Road.
Sunderland striker Niall Quinn was the latest withdrawal from the Republic squad because of an ankle injury and after Ipswich skipper Matt Holland was also forced to pull out with slight knee and ankle problems.
Republic manager Mick McCarthy said: "Young Morrison impressed me when playing for our under-21 team against Portugal and Estonia at the end of last season.
"Now he could get a run-out against Croatia. He is definitely one for the future."
He added: "I thought it better that Quinn and Holland miss out on this game so that they are fully fit for the Holland game on Saturday week.
"Fortunately their injuries are only short-term and they should be back for the Dutch game.
"I expect to be without (Charlton midfielder) Mark Kinsella, he's had a hernia operation which will keep him out for six weeks.
"I'm hoping that our other injury absentees this week will be fit for the Holland game."
If Morrison gets the call, he will partner Leeds' Robbie Keane in the Irish attack against Croatia.
Apart from Keane and Morrison, the only other recognised striker in the 20-man squad is new Wimbledon signing David Connolly, although Gary Doherty has filled that role in the past.
But the Tottenham man's future looks to be in the centre of defence for both club and country. -PA
