A mother from the North Eastern Health Board region gave birth in an ambulance en route to Cavan hospital this morning.
A health board spokeswoman said an ambulance from Monaghan General Hospital responded to a call from the woman's GP in Ballybay Co Monaghan just before 9 a.m.
"The ambulance crew arrived at the surgery at 9.17 a.m. and the baby was born five minutes later". She said mother and child are both in excellent health.
A midwife and doctor from Cavan Hospital travelled to meet the woman and accompanied her to Cavan Hospital.
This is the second such incident this month. On July 3rd a woman presented at Monaghan General Hospital in labour but gave birth in an ambulance when she was told she would have to travel to Cavan hospital.
Management at Monaghan hospital came in for criticism after an independent review panel found that baby Bronagh Livingstone should have been delivered at the hospital rather than be transferred to Cavan Hospital.
