Gardaí have named the 22-year-old motorist who died in a road traffic accident in Co Waterford, one of two deaths on Irish roads in the last two days.

She was Ms Eimear Reid, from Mitchelstown, Co Cork, who died after the car she was driving collided with a van at Cappagh, Co Waterford.

The accident happened at 6.25 p.m. on Monday. An hour later in Co Antrim, a 57-year-old woman was fatally injured when the car she was driving was in collision with another car on the Gallagh Road in Toomebridge. Ms Reid was removed to hospital where she later died.

Ms Reid's death brings to four the number of people who have died in road traffic accidents in the Republic since January 1st.

Last year 379 people died in road accidents, 44 more than the previous year. Of those 69 were pedestrians and 86 were passengers. A further 159 drivers died while 12 cyclists were killed and 50 motorcyclists. Pillion passengers accounted for three of the fatalities.

Three young men died in two separate crashes on New Year's Day. Two teenagers, Adrian McSharry and Aidan Leonard,from Glenfarne, Co Leitrim, died when the van in which they were travelling hit a tree at Glenfarne, Co Leitrim, at 2 a.m. An hour later Mr Anthony Hopkins (26), from Broadford, Co Kildare, died when his car hit a tree on the Broadford to Edenderry road.

On New Year's Eve a female cyclist was seriously injured at Harold's Cross Road, Dublin, at 9 a.m. She was reportedly hit by a truck turning a corner.
