AA Roadwatch are warning motorists to drive with extreme care and to be aware of surface water on many roads.

All Stena Line services from Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead have been cancelled due to rough seas. Similiarly Irish Ferries sailings between Dublin and Holyhead have also been cancelled.

Strong westerly winds are one of the main contributory factors to the severe weather this weekend. Met Éireann said high winds would continue today before easing later tonight.

Rain would clear to scattered showers in many areas however rain will continue in northern parts through the day and will extend back southwards during the afternoon and evening, it said.

Yesterday power supplies to parts of the west and southwest were cut during storms.
