A young Dublin man who was stabbed while serving a sentence in Mountjoy Prison died of wounds to the chest, an inquest has heard.

Derek Glennon-Kennedy (24), Stanaway Road, Crumlin, died at the Mater hospital on June 25th after being stabbed a number of times, Dublin City Coroner's Court heard yesterday.

A postmortem by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis confirmed that Mr Glennon-Kennedy died of "penetrating stab wounds" to the chest.

Coroner Dr Brian Farrell adjourned the inquest following an application by Insp Gerard Donnelly of Fitzgibbon Street Garda station, who said criminal proceedings had begun.

The inquest into Mr Glennon-Kennedy's death will reconvene once these proceedings have been completed.

The incident occurred on Mountjoy's D-wing landing before the evening recess on June 25th.

Mr Glennon-Kennedy had been serving a 10-year sentence at Mountjoy Prison for manslaughter.
