The Government is being urged to establish a regulatory body to oversee the training of sunbed operators and monitor safety standards in health clubs.
Labour TD Ms Mary Upton said the use of sunbeds is completely unregulated despite the fact that "it is well established that severe burns to the skin and damage to the eyes can result from their incorrect use".
She said only trained, qualified personnel should be allowed to provide the service to the public. Routine checks of sunbeds by qualified technicians should also be mandatory, said Ms Upton.
