Sarno - The death toll from last week's mudslides in southern Italy rose to 124 yesterday as rescuers searched desperately for more survivors. In Sarno, the worst-hit village in the stricken region around Naples, civil protection officials said a total of 103 people were killed when heavy rains sent a torrent of mud and debris surging through its streets.
A mass funeral was held for 95 of the village's dead on Sunday in an emotion-charged final farewell after days of agonised digging.
