A murder inquiry has been started after the body of a man was discovered in an alleyway in Belfast.
The dead man, believed to be in his 40s, had been beaten on the head and suffered severe injuries, detectives said.
The man, who was found behind houses on Eglantine Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday, was identified by police yesterday afternoon.
Details were being withheld until relatives had been informed, an RUC spokesman said.
One man, who lives nearby, told BBC radio he heard an argument in the alleyway on Friday night.
At around 6 a.m. on Saturday, he saw a man's body lying in the alley. He did not report the incident as he thought the man was sleeping.
Police have refused to say whether paramilitary involvement is suspected in the attack. A post-mortem was taking place yesterday afternoon.
This is the second murder in Eglantine Avenue over the past year.
On New Year's Eve, Alastair Holmes (30) was found stabbed to death in his flat.
A 16-year-old youth was later charged with the murder.
Eglantine Avenue, situated on the edge of one of Belfast's busiest nightlife districts in the south of the city, has become home to a growing number of students and young professionals. Many of the three-storey terraced houses have been converted into flats.
